Far more than a few people
think and talk about someday writing a novel. Some even start.
Some finish but never revise, and even if they do they never submit
their work. Thus far I've managed to complete two novels.
From my research, the odds
for a submitted manuscript to be published appear to be against the
average writer--less than1% of novels written and submitted ever find a
publisher. Thus far, mine have proven better than the average
submission (each novel made it out of one slush pile--Tor and Twilight
Times) but didn't make the final cut.
For writers out there,
with the state of the publishing industry's consolidation, the chances
are grim--but not impossible. The chances are utterly hopeless,
however, if one doesn't actually submit.
One rule to
remember with respect to anything related to publishing:

Relic
Tech
UPDATE (October 2005) Submitted Relic Tech
to Baen. Anticipated month of reply is November 2006 if they pass,
longer if they have an interest. Jim Baen passed away over the
summer from an unexpected stroke and that has slowed down their
turnaround time.

UPDATE ( November 2006) Relic Tech has
merited a full read by the "slush pile" gate keeper. If she likes
it, Relic Tech will be passed on to the Managing Editor, who
would read it and say "Yes" or "No" to offering a publishing
contract. No news is good news in this case, and will probably take
another year. Odds are still quite long, but the first major hurdle
(out from the thousands of manuscripts in the slush pile) has been
achieved.
UPDATE (February 2007) Still waiting a
second full read.
UPDATE (March 2008) "Under consideration by
Upper Management."
So, what is my Science Fiction novel about?
