Name a Character
in the next
First Civilization's Legacy novel!
(How often do you get a chance to
name a character in a novel?)
To enter the contest:
1. Contact me via
email and say you would like to have your name entered into the
selection/drawing.
a. Email me at:
terrywervin2 [at] yahoo.com (replace
the [at] with an @
b. Make sure the subject
line includes the words 'Name a Character Contest'
2. If you purchase a copy of Flank
Hawk, your name is listed/entered twice!
a. Your name may be
entered only twice no matter how many copies you purchase.
b. To prove you've
purchased a copy, name a character and describe why you liked or
disliked that character (be sure to include enough detail to demonstrate
you read the novel).
Basic Guidelines:
1. The name must not be that
of a real person and/or libelous in any way.
2. The name must not be taken from
another work (film, television, print, etc.).
a. Not even a close approximation (no Harry Plotter,
for example).
3. The managing editor/publisher of
Gryphonwood Press has final approval of any name to be used.
a. Even the names that
I use have to pass editorial muster.
b. As author, the tone and
integrity of the story must remain intact, so an inappropriate name will
not be accepted--and forwarded to my editor simply to have it rejected.
(For example, a powerful knight battling alongside Prince Reveron would
not be named Wimpy the Weedwhacker)
4. I will work with the winner to help
identify a character in the novel (including personality, station in
life, etc.) that would be appropriate, or will give a character
description to the selected contest winner after discussion, and allow
the contest winner to formulate a name.
5. I will make all reasonable efforts to
notify all entrants of the winner and the name created for a character
in the second First Civilization's Legacy novel.
a. If the drawn/selected
winner does not respond by email within one week of notification to
begin the naming process, a second individual will be drawn and the
original winner will have forfeited their chance to name the character.
b. If an email address
becomes invalid or at an event where the entrant signs up in person and
the email address cannot be read/deciphered, that individual will not be
eligible and will not be contacted.
c. If the winner and the author
cannot come to agreement on a reasonable name (see 3b above) or the
editorial staff at Gryphonwood Press deems the name not proper or
appropriate for publication (for whatever reason), at the option of the
author another winner may be drawn from the entrants.
6. A contract indemnifying the author
and the publisher from any legal or other action arising from the name
selection by the winner of the drawing must be agreed to and signed by
the contest winner.
(I know, a lot of rules and such, but they are there
to protect the author, publisher and the contest winner)
